Concerns Over AI Regulation and Safety
telling you that their models are very dangerous.
I think we should believe them.
It, it certainly is like some, some crazy 4D chess to- ...
you know, um,
you know, as, say the, these i- there, there's whatever 10% chance of
annihilating
humanity. But by the way, um, how much allocation would you like in our
IPO?
Yeah, okay, so there's the crux. See, some people are saying this is dangerous,
take it seriously, but others say these are AI giants who are
trying to create a government-sanctioned monopoly where they're the ones that
have the keys to the kingdom and no other startups can ever get inside
the door.
What do you think?
I think anyone who's read about the promise of AI or the threat of
AI is reasonably concerned about out of control AI
tools-
Mm
... that can cause damage. They're also excited about the promise
that, that it
has. What we have seen in the last week though
is something kind of
altogether different, which is top oligarchs from some of these top
tech companies all coming out at the same time and saying, "We need a
regulatory scheme to deal with the fact that we're running dangerous
companies." It is kinda weird that they claim that they're running
dangerous
companies, but they don't wanna do anything about it
themselves.
They're asking for regulation. On the other hand, if you're in DC,
you see this all
the time. Companies innovate, people innovate,
they start making a lot of
money, and boy have these AI companies had a lot
of money pouring into
them.
Oh, yeah.
And then you don't want anyone else to compete with you-
Mm
... while you're trying to secure more and more profit.
And so some people are s- are a little bit suspicious about how this
is all coming
out at the same time, amplified by people who
are heavily aligned
with Democrat donors. And you saw President Barack Obama
and former
presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer,
whose own daughter works at one of these AI companies.
They're all coming out and saying, "Uh, we now need to do a regulatory scheme to
deal with this, uh, alleged threat."
I mean, for me the, the, the one big red flag
is what company invites government
regulation?
Well, it-
They're all trying to get rid of government regulation-
Except that-
... for the most part
... except that if you are trying to keep out competitors,
that's actually a pretty
common thing that you see people say.
They-
No, I mean, m- but for any other reason than that.
Yeah.
So, so, uh, the doomer warnings that AI is gonna kill us all, I mean, that
we've seen in the last week, there's been a lot out of Jacob Coxen
formerly from,
from Anthropic and, uh,
OpenAI came out. Here's what Jerry Baker wrote in the Wall
Street Journal.
"I'm a natural skeptic of alarmism and suspicious whenever a company tells me
the
government must do something. We have been told for the past 70 years
that unless
the government acts, life on the planet is about to be extinguished by nuclear
weapons, climate change, Y2K, pandemics. We're still waiting.
There has not yet been an extinction-level eve- uh, event." Uh, I mean,
on the one hand as you point out, AI can be extraordinarily helpful
and beneficial, but then there is a potential dark side
that I find frightening.
Well, that is absolutely true, but what I think people
are concerned about in this
particular case is that people are fomenting hysteria
about AI precisely so that a group of people who are heavily
aligned with the Democratic Party can have control of the
entire AI space. You know, whoever controls information
controls politics. We went from radio to TV to cable TV
to social media, and now we're in this age of AI
algorithms.
Whoever controls that will have the power to censor any
opinions they don't want.
Mm-hmm.
And a lot of the people who are involved here, Barack Obama,
Kamala Harris, and
some of these AI tech companies, were involved with some of the worst
and most
egregious censh- censorship that we saw during COVID,
where you weren't
allowed to talk freely about what was going on or else you'd be punished on
these,
um, social media platforms. And if they can control
information, they can control politics for decades to
come.
And so the fact that you're seeing a partisan divide here, where all of the
prominent Democrats are pushing for a particular regulatory
scheme, but the
Republicans are saying, "We're not so sure,"
is really a reflection of that
censorship issue.
You know, I keep hearing we've gotta win the AI
race.
I'm not sure what victory looks like because China's certainly gonna keep going
even if we get there first. I don't know. Mollye, good to talk to you.
Thanks so much.
Thanks.
Appreciate it. Sandra?
