Optimal Positions for Childbirth
This is not the best position to birth your baby in, but most of us are gonna
be coached in this position because that's the training of our provider,
and that's all they know. Being on your back, knees wide, defies the
biomechanics of childbirth. When you lay on your back, your
sacrum doesn't kick out like it should to make more room in your
pelvis. Also, knees wide creates your sit bones to
be closer together, which narrows the pathway for your baby to
be born,
creates more exhausting pushing stage for you,
and the tissues won't stretch, which
increases your chances of tearing.
So what is the best position to birth your baby in?
It's the position that you decide to put your body in in
that moment
when your baby is ready to come out of your body.
Our body knows how to birth a baby, and our babies know how to be
born. When it comes time to birth your baby,
there's a few things you're going to
do instinctually. One, you're gonna stack your platforms,
which is
diaphragm over pelvic floor, and you're going to sink into it with
that fetal ejection reflex. Two, they put their body in a position
to use gravity. So they get on
their hands and knees, stacking their platforms, or
they get into a high squat, which stacks their platforms
to birth their baby. And the third thing
is instinctually you'll move your
knees closer together and your ankles out, so that
causes the sit bones to expand and open the bottom of the
pelvis to make it an easier pathway for your baby to come out
and gives your tissues that opportunity to stretch to decrease
the chances of tearing. You have the right to birth in the
position you feel
is best for you and your baby. If you would like to learn more about my
