Brazil Election: Flávio Bolsonaro and Alexandre de Moraes Controversy
What the is going on in Brazil right now?
Well, let me put it this way.
Imagine you lose an election, and seven minutes later, a judge
comes for your passport.
That's exactly what happened to Flávio
Bolsonaro, a sitting senator in Brazil,
on Sunday night, when
Supreme Court Justice
Alexandre de Moraes authorized police to
seize it. The case was about a bank account, and
that same morning, the
bank had told the court
Bolsonaro's name wasn't even on it.
Two days later,
he crossed into Argentina and landed in
Miami. The crazy part is that
the judge who signed the order has a
bank story of his
own. His wife's law firm declared
80.2 million reais, Brazil's currency,
in payments from a bank,
and the contract shows edits from
a user under the justice's own
name. The prosecutor general
closed a probe into
it before those edits
even came out. Moraes
denies any wrongdoing.
Anyway, Flávio
Bolsonaro is under
investigation, may well be
guilty, and broke a court
order when he left.
But none of that answers
a separate question: Why
does the judge seem to play
by different rules?
Both things can be true at once.
One of the senators who
will weigh whether
that judge gets impeached is Marcel Van
Hattem, a Students for
Liberty alum just elected
into Rio Grande
do Sul. If you've been
following the whole drama
too, let me know what you think
about the results of the election in Brazil in the comments section.
And make sure you're following to keep up with Students for Liberty.
