Farmers' Voting Choices and Student Loans
I have a question for farmers, and don't worry,
it's not who did you vote for.
I know you're getting a lot of that right now.
My question is, a few years ago, when student loan
forgiveness was a big subject,
what was your take?
What was your attitude? Were you empathetic and understanding?
Did you say, wow, it sounds like these people need help?
Were you intellectually curious?
Did you say, hmm, I should look into student loan
forgiveness and see what it
actually means? Or were you belligerent and
dismissive? Did you say things like, I never went to college,
why should they get a
free ride? I bet they all got degrees in basket
weaving.
Follow-up question, now that you need help, how does it feel
to be subjected to ridicule, judgment, and scorn?
Here's why the who did you vote for question is important.
In 2024, around 80% of farmers voted for
Trump.
Even though during Trump's first term, his trade
policies were so bad they sent farm bankruptcies
skyrocketing and a $50 billion
subsidy was needed in order to save American farmers,
then you turned right back around and voted for these same
policies.
Why? Was it collective
amnesia? In 2024,
23 Nobel Prize-winning economists said Kamala Harris
has the better plan. 154 surveyed historians,
political scientists, and academics by the numbers pointed
out that Trump was by far the worst president in all of U.S.
history,
and you had just lived through his horrible trade policies, and you
voted for it again.
When student loan forgiveness was on the table, many people said,
including a lot of you, well, they shouldn't have taken out loans they
couldn't pay for.
That's why you get asked, why did you vote for what
everyone knew was going to bankrupt you?
