Genetic Insights into Palestinian Ancestry
Genetic studies confirm that modern-day Palestinians
descend from the earliest hunter-gatherer and farmer
populations that inhabited the Levant region over
10,000 years ago.
Other Bronze and Iron Age civilizations that emerged in the
region, like the Canaanites, Phoenicians, Israelites,
and Philistines, also left genetic imprints in
today’s Palestinian gene pool.
Study published in the journal Cell focused on the
DNA of ancient Philistines.
The results suggested that Palestinians descend in part from the
ancient Philistines who lived in the same region over
3,000 years ago. The study received some
criticism, but overall provided new genetic
insights into the ancestors of modern populations in the
Levant region.
For instance, Jews exhibit more European genetic
ancestry
in their paternal lineages, likely due to European
male converts integrating into Jewish communities.
On the other hand, Palestinians show a greater mix of
Egyptian,
Arabian, and sub-Saharan African genes,
reflecting the historical movements and interactions within
the Levant region.
