Police Encounter Over Traffic Stop Misunderstanding
Let me see your hands! Put your hands up.
For what? I walk out of the garage, and this police officer's got a gun
pointed
directly at me, asking me to turn around, get on the ground, interlace my
fingers behind my head. And entire time you can hear me just
saying, "For what?"
Like, I, I'm so confused. I don't know what's going on.
At, at this point I think he's got the wrong
house, the wrong guy.
Like, I don't know what he's doing. So I'm like, "For what?
For what?" I'm sorry, but I, I don't know, bro. I didn't see you.
Lean against-
I-
No. You definitely saw me-
I-
'cause you saw me. As soon as you whipped around those cars-
No, I don't-
... and almost lost control coming around 434.
I didn't lose control.
I... Listen to me. I literally watched you.
Okay.
I turned around, immediately hit my lights and sirens,
and you took off on me.
I didn't s- I didn't see your lights. I was coming home.
I have a, I have a meeting. I was trying to get home.
Well, I, I don't believe you.
I promise you.
So hang out right there.
I'm a good guy, bro. I promise you.
I, I don't care.
All right.
Just hang out right there. Don't move.
Kevin Finley had just returned home from dropping his kids off at school.
As his garage door is closing, he hears something outside
that sounds like the
police. At first, he thinks something maybe happened to his
elderly neighbor, so he
reopens his garage door to see what's going on, and he's shocked to see a police
officer aiming a gun at him, shouting commands at him.
Let me see your hands! Put your hands up.
For what?
Walk over here.
For what?
Walk over here.
For what?
One at gunpoint. Come here.
For what?
Keep walking. Turn around. Turn around.
For what?
Get on your knees. Get on your knees.
For what?
Interlace your fingers behind your head.
He's handcuffed behind his back as more police officers arrive at the scene.
Why'd you pull into your... I didn't see him.
I swear to God I'm not playing.
What, was your music too loud?
He learns that Winter Springs, Florida, Police Officer Eric Schwartz is accusing
him of fleeing an attempted traffic stop, a felony.
But this is Kevin's first time seeing Officer Schwartz ever.
He knew nothing about any attempted traffic stop.
Put your hands behind your back.
But this officer is saying that he did.
When there's lights behind you, lights and sirens, and you take off.
And this could send Kevin to prison.
I'm sorry.
You definitely saw me.
I didn't.
Lean against my car. Spread your feet wider. Don't move.
Is the officer lying, or is this just some crazy mistake?
Lights and sirens are still on. He starts closing his garage, so I'm like,
"Oh, ,
he's running." So I get out of my car and start going this way.
Next thing I know, he's opening the garage .
So obviously, I don't know, if you just opened your garage
and now you have a gun
in your hand or something. But yeah, so he was ordered at gunpoint at
that point.
As these thoughts are racing through Kevin's mind,
he remembers that his
Tesla is equipped with cameras that would have filmed him driving from
all
directions. The truth would be on the Tesla's cameras,
and it was.
But the craziest part about it was that the cops and prosecutors didn't even
care about the truth.
We thought they were gonna drop it, but it seemed like this is a game, like,
a, to
see who will take a plea deal and, you know, who will continue to kinda,
like,
kinda like a game of chicken, essentially.
He's swearing up and down that he didn't know I was behind him.
He said he didn't fishtail. He said a car wasn't going.
He went around the car.
He didn't fishtail 'cause he has an all-wheel drive Tesla.
It doesn't do that, and he was just a good boy listener,
listening to music and
just came back.
So I don't know.
He, he said he's swearing he didn't see me the
entire time.
