Understanding Plantar Fasciitis Pain
Plantar fasciitis: why first steps hurt more than walking.
Why does plantar fasciitis hurt most on the first steps, then ease as
you keep walking? After resting, the foot stays still
and the plantar fascia
remains unloaded for a while. When you stand up, that tissue is suddenly
stretched and loaded again, especially near its attachment at the
heel.
Those first steps can feel sharp because the fascia is being asked to handle force
before the foot and calf have fully warmed up.
As you continue walking, movement increases tissue temperature.
The ankle becomes less stiff, and the load spreads more smoothly through
the foot,
so the pain may calm down even though the irritation is still there.
First steps create the sudden load. Walking gradually redistributes it.
