The Abandonment of Ancient Rome
Rome was abandoned for 700 years, from 410 A.D. to 1084 A.D.
The last emperor dies in 476, population drops from a million to 20,000.
Colosseum becomes a cow pasture, everything is buried as you see here.
Everything buried, aqueducts broken, weeds in the forum, no kings, no senate, no legions, all just gone and erased.
No invasion records for five centuries, no battle maps, no taxes, nothing, just gone.
Nomads ride in and 1084 find a ghost town, completely abandoned and buried.
700 years, the seat of the greatest empire in history was abandoned and somehow just buried in mud.
Historians explain this particularly because a civilization like Rome built all these aqueducts,
massive and beautiful architecture that still survives to this day, the world over pretty much,
couldn't figure out how to dispose of their garbage properly and they just threw it in their streets
and the cultural layers, as it were, stacked up. Does anybody really believe that they couldn't
invent a garbage dump or some proper way to dispose of their refuge?
