Using Shadows for Direction Finding
Push a stick straight into the ground and mark the exact tip of its shadow with
a
stone. Wait 15 minutes, then mark where the shadow tip has moved
with a
second stone. Draw a line connecting both stones.
That line runs east to west. Now stand with your left foot on the first
stone
and your right foot on the second. You are facing north.
The sun always moves from east to west, which means the shadow always
moves in the opposite direction. Soldiers used this method for centuries
with
nothing more than a stick and two rocks.
