Critique of Democracy and Governance
Democracy is the only legitimate system.
It gives power to the people, a voice and a vote for everyone.
It respects the individual.
It gives the illusion of power. You have a vote, but you don't
have knowledge. You're choosing between two brands
that were
curated by the same wealthy few. You're asked to pick
a CEO for a company you don't understand.
That's elitist. We have access to information.
We can study the issues. Everyone is capable of making a wise
choice for the collective good.
Capable, yes, but we are rationally
ignorant. It takes hours to truly understand
tax policy or foreign aid.
Why would you when your single vote's effect on the outcome
is statistically zero?
It's rational to stay ignorant.
But democracy protects us from tyranny.
It's the best defense against corruption because we can vote the bad ones out.
It creates a different kind of tyranny, the tyranny
of the majority. It allows a fifty-one
percent majority to oppress the forty-nine percent
minority legally.
Furthermore, politicians only serve the wealthy
donors who fund their campaigns,
regardless of your vote.
No, that's cynicism. The founders built in checks and balances,
a constitution, a judiciary to prevent the system from
collapsing into mob rule or oligarchy.
The checks and balances are now just a political battlefield,
and as for the Constitution, who enforces it?
Humans. Humans corrupted by power.
We have a system ruled by popular emotion, not reason,
amplified by social media.
So what's the alternative? Rule by experts?
A king? That leads to oppression and disaster.
The alternative is accepting reality.
You are already ruled by unelected experts and wealthy
interests. Democracy just wastes time
asking you for permission.
True progress comes when decisions are made by those
with the most data, not the most likes.
So we should just give up on self-governance entirely?
No,
but we should admit that democracy is a myth of control
designed to keep the masses quiet.
The conversation isn't about if you're controlled but
who is doing the controlling and whether you benefit.
