Critique of Public School System
The public school system is more similar to the prison
system than most people like to admit.
Children spend most of their time locked between concrete walls.
They get a little bit of yard time, a short lunch break, and they have to ask
permission to do anything, including go to the bathroom,
air with the same people every day no matter what,
whether those people are violent, on drugs, inappropriately promiscuous.
They cannot walk away or choose who they want to be around because
for the first pretty much 18 years of their life, they have no freedom
of association, which is a bad lesson
because people tend to become the sum of the five people they hang around the most.
I want to teach my children that if someone's engaged in bad behavior,
you should walk away from that person and shouldn't be around them.
And because of that, school like
prison becomes more about surviving, not about learning.
And you see this with the depression rates in schools,
which by every observable measure are through the roof.
The anxiety rates, kids get involved in cliques, they dress the same,
they talk the same, they behave the same because it just becomes about surviving.
And if you had to choose which classroom better prepares you for the real world,
the public school prison or the world itself,
because nature is a classroom, a museum is a classroom, a restaurant is a classroom,
a business is a classroom, a farm is a classroom, a co op is a classroom,
the world should be your child's classroom.
And if you do that,
you get your kids out into nature,
teach them that they should trust their senses and discern truth for themselves.
They will do wonderful things in the world because the world was their classroom.
