Using Visualization for Mental Health
Let me tell you the greatest mental health hack, and ironically, it's
actually probably the greatest mental health stressor: visualization.
You have to learn how to use your imagination the right way.
You see, when I talk to people about this
initially, they're like, "Oh, that's
crazy, man. Like, now you're getting into this visualization
stuff.
I don't buy that." Really? What do you think fear is?
What do you think worry is? You are visualizing an
unfavorable outcome. It hasn't happened yet.
You don't know if it's gonna happen, but you're visualizing and imagining
it. You're bringing it into the present, and you're believing that.
That's the exact way that you pray.
When you pray, you believe that the thing that you're praying about
has happened.
You take it now in the present, and you have peace about it, right?
Well, anxiety is that, but it's just a negative prayer.
So here's what you have to do. You need to visualize and imagine that
the thing that you want is already there.
"Well, Mike, that's not real. I'm pretending." Remember,
you're doing it already.
You're always pretending. I mean, 90% of your entertainment is
pretending. All the Netflix shows that you watch are pretending.
All your favorite movies are pretending.
All the sports that you like, they're all-- the teams
are pretending like they
actually have beef with each other, and yet doesn't it still impact you
emotionally? You need to use your imagination
or pretend in the
right direction. Listen, when I was
330 pounds, I had to pretend and
imagine the version of me that had a six-pack.
He didn't exist yet, but I had to see him and be him,
and what do
you think happened? But this is a muscle that you have to practice.
