Psilocybin's Impact on Alzheimer's Patients
All of a sudden, she could talk again.
She remembered words, she remembered her family.
She could speak in full sentences. She regained her memory.
She-
This Alzheimer's patient, she regained speech, memory, and
bladder control after a single psilocybin dose.
Tell us about this.
Yeah, this is absolutely, uh, uh, groundbreaking actually,
because for Alzheimer's, we haven't really ever
seen a documented case report of somebody with
advanced Alzheimer's basically going into at least
partial remission, right? And so what they found in this
particular case was this was a, an, an elderly woman
with advanced Alzheimer's. She could barely hold a sentence.
She could barely talk. She wet the bed at night, and they said,
"You know what? We're gonna try. We're gonna give her psilocybin." They
gave her
five grams of that, okay? That's a very high dose. So she...
And so she literally, like, went into a sleep-like state for
15 hours. And when she woke up from the sleep, um,
all of a sudden, she could talk again.
She remembered words, she remembered her family.
She could speak in full sentences. She regained her memory.
She regained her ability to hold conversations.
She even regained her bladder control.
She stopped wetting the bed, and she regained mobility.
She could walk again. So it's absolutely crazy, and it's
explained by the mechanisms behind it.
So what psilocybin does is it actually increases the
growth rate on neurons, right? It actually boosts
the literal regeneration of the dendrites on your
neurons and helps that connectivity, uh, become
stronger. And so in people with Alzheimer's,
it's all damaged.
Um, it appears this may be able to kind of
restart that, that healing process and lead to these improvements.
So now we obviously need larger studies with way more people than
one person, uh, but no Alzheimer's drug has ever done
anything close to this.
