Behind the Scenes of a Film Project
I've been wanting to make this video my entire life.
I love the genre of like the sleek film
where e- everything is in its own sort of color world,
monochromatic, you don't quite understand the world,
and you don't
understand what's wrong with this couple until you do,
meets ghost story, meets
true crime, meets a lot of the plot lines I've seen on
Dateline,
and here we go.
Twins.
Oh, my God.
How funny.
This is fantastic. This is what, this has been, this is de- what
was destined to
happen.
This is the dream. Sometimes when you work with your friends,
it can really go
south
and it'll, you know, like affect your friendship, but she and
I work really well together. We'll do our synchronized routine.
Yeah, the one that we've been practicing for
years.
Yeah.
Finally.
Finally, we get to bring it out into the light.
And action.
No-
Taylor.
Ah.
We'll never get it again.
Amazing.
We'll never get it again.
How fun is it to see each other every day?
The best. It's the best. I really recommend that everyone, uh, make
projects with your friends. It could be kind of like a-
Yeah
... like a rip the jacket off and crash into his mouth kind of thing.
Yeah.
Like a quick moment.
I'm just gonna
go crazy.
Yeah.
All right.
And action.
Cut. Oh, my God, I got a thousand things.
That was incredible.
We're halfway there. 100,000 in two times.
How was it, how was it, how was working with Cara?
There was one person I was calling in for this,
exactly one person on the list.
Clear. Clear.
Oh, having a new boss, incredible. We're in our showboy era, okay?
That's right.
Life of a showboy, this is it. What I'm looking for is speed.
This is a very quick beat, so it's gonna be handing the award,
uh-huh.
Cool. You know? Yeah. Colin is so adventurous in terms of his taste in
roles he would take on, like loves exploring those sides of, of
humanity, like the darker edges of it.
Is there, is there any degree of him enjoying
taunting her like that?
I mean, is there-
Yeah.
Yes.
Have fun.
Play a man who's very successful, very ambitious, an absolute
malignant narcissist, and a psychopath, and all that kind of stuff, so it's not
much of a stretch. Have to say that.
I'm so excited about him being so
wonderful, open,
free, and playful, and passionate about doing this,
but I really want you very
charming.
I know.
Very charming.
Action, Collins.
Oh, my God, this is great. The newest element of this shoot is
that I'm working with a brand-new, uh, DP, cinematographer that I've never worked
with before. His name is Chivo. They call him that because it means goat,
'cause
he's the fucking, he's the GOAT.
Whoa.
Oh.
I didn't see it, but I felt it.
Was that what I thought it was? I think so, but check. Let's take a look.
Take a look.
Show me playback, Rich.
Perfect, perfect, perfect, perfect, perfect, perfect, perfect.
Oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God.
Dude. Walking through here and seeing the, the way that Chivo has
lit this and the way these sets are and how brilliantly Ethan has done this
production design, I'm kind of like
rethinking the release of the video.
Like, I need to figure out a way to get this on
TV or something.
I'm sort of like, I'm like, "Ethan, Google, when are the VMAs?"
It looks like CG. Chivo's crazy. He's so good.
Oh, my God, that idea.
Oh. Is that over? God. I could run through a wall.
The joy she has
with her creative engine, which is a really significant creative engine,
the
joy she has with it is really quite humbling, actually.
It's very moving.
I love this. I love... Hey, Chivo, so what I'm looking for
is I'm looking for like
motion of like, "I Betty Burst into Your Life like
Fireworks," boom. Mm-hmm.
So if you could come in- Yeah ... like movement. I need movement. Yeah.
And like I want this to be the fun, fast-paced, flirtatious beginnings of a
hot new sexy love that also could be your husband.
Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Do something where you like pick her up
and twirl her
around or something. Give me some movement and, Chivo,
can you move at the same
time too? Oh, my God.
Oh, my gosh.
It's like we choreographed it.
It's really, really cool. It really goes kind of-
It's like amazing ...
kind of seamless-ish.
It's fun to watch her at work. I love her as a
director.
All I'm looking for is like him, I think you toying with her
or you- Yeah, yeah ... and you s- and you scaring her,
but I think silent treatment
in the beginning. You love embarrassing me in front of
people.
I've, no, I wasn't do- You come here and I'll do it ... I didn't do that.
I wasn't... Please slow down. You're very, very- Look, you're even stuttering now.
You're not even telling the truth. I'm not stuttering.
Let's do this stuff around.
Also, if you want to start out with some
silence, you know how- Great ...
that moment before anyone says anything in a fight- Just this comfort ...
is the worst. We know it's coming. Yeah. So you can do that as long as you want.
All right, cool. I have so much respect for the expertise
and the
art form that they have dedicated their lives to.
Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut.
Oh, that was really, really, really beauti-...
Dakota, how can you just go there? My God.
Dakota will be
bawling her eyes out, sobbing, catatonic,
despondent, and then she's just like, "Okay, what's next?"
Ready, and action.
Oh, my gosh, and she didn't spill it again, and it
was perfect.
She continues to not spill the wine while in full free fall.
That's like a skill I shouldn't have.
It's the final day of the shoot, and it's the 13th, and we're in this
fantastic, incredible art piece of a home
that we're very lucky to shoot in.
So this home has really become like a character in the video, which is exciting,
'cause I love it when a location can really help like
world build.
Dakota.
Welcome. Look at the way that it looks out there.
Look at how it looks out there. This looks fake.
This is, it seems fake. This looks like on a sound stage,
what- Fully
... fully. Those things look like, you know? I'm a professional.
Too many clouds, no one will believe it.
Also, it's weird that you can see the ocean,
'cause it's still quite
misty or foggy. Yeah, I don't understand any of this.
I think that we might be in a really fun part of the simulation.
This isn't real, is it? Yeah, so I just- There's no way.
I'm pretty obsessed with, like, making a shot symmetrical.
It just,
it makes my brain feel good, and there's this
symmetrical pool landing. And then we see through the house, Dakota
here, Colin here, fighting across the table in the
background.
I'm telling you, Brendan Fraser was far there.
Don't do this shit.
The fact that it's, like, the dumbest fight ever.
Oh my God. Chivo.
This is good.
It's amazing.
Guys, I have a very important announcement to
make.
That is a wrap on Dakota Johnson.
Dakota sandwich, you guys are electric together.
Thank you.
This is just a short film reel for everyone else-
Thank you
... gonna cast you as a husband and wife.
I couldn't even sleep last night, 'cause I was like, "I can't believe this
happened."
Like, th- th- this really happened, and I got to be a part of this.
Didn't see myself being a video vixen as a middle-aged Irish actor.
That wasn't on the card. And action.
I love this.
Chivo, do you love that?
Love it. I think we have a bunch.
Uh-huh, we have a bunch.
Yeah, it's like a magic-
Oh my God, you know what that means.
We are wrapped on The Marries, ladies and
gentlemen.
Thank you for having me.
Oh, thank you.
Thank you for having me.
Of course.
It's a good.
Chivo.
Chivo.
And Steve, our director.
