Innovative Fire Extinguishing Technology
Okay, welcome back. One tech company now has a new way to
fight fires.
It's with sound waves. The Ohio-based firm is using low frequency
tones to disrupt the air molecules around flames,
starving the fire of oxygen without a drop of water, without any messy
chemicals. Max Gordon reports live from Santa
Barbara, California with the details.
Tell us what you got, Max.
Hey, Jillian. Well, fire needs three things.
It needs oxygen, it needs heat, and it needs fuel, and Sonic
Fire Tech has developed this device, kind of looks like something out of the
Ghostbusters, that shoots sound waves at a
fire, and it oscillates the oxygen molecules
and essentially
starves the fire of oxygen. So what we're going to do is we're
going to light this gasoline here on fire. Let's do it.
And you're gonna see how it's done.
Just like that, so quick it almost seems like magic.
Take a listen.
There's a little skeptic in me every time I light a fire. Is it gonna work?
But it does, and that's where the physics has taken
hold.
It's magic 'cause you can't see it, but we are oscillating oxygen at a
rate fuel can't, fire can't exist, and that's breaking
that chemical reaction,
and that's what we're seeing.
Those at Sonic Fire Tech say the sound waves have not been found to be
harmful to either people or pets, and Sonic Fire Tech wants to install
systems using this technology in homes as an alternative to fire
sprinklers. They hope that using sound to extinguish fires can
be less destructive
than sprinklers, which can cause water damage
when they go off.
And Sonic Fire Tech says that their first system in a
home will be installed in Altadena, in an area that was destroyed by
the Eaton Fire. When it comes to cost, they say that it's comparable
to a home sprinkler system. Back to you.
