Managing Sciatica Pain from Sitting
Why sitting makes sciatica pain worse.
Sciatica is nerve pain, usually from irritation of the sciatic
nerve
roots in the low back.
And when you sit, your pelvis rotates backwards,
lumbar spine goes into flexion,
and this puts more pressure on your discs, which puts more pressure on your sciatic
nerve and results in the pain you have today. But guess what?
You can fix it. Step one: extend your pelvis support to rotate your
pelvis
forward, which will push your lumbar spine back
into extension and take pressure
off your disc. If you don't have an awesome Anthros
chair, you can use a water
bottle or a towel to get by instead.
Step two: that'll get you through the day, but you need actual
exercises to fix it long term. Lay flat on your stomach and extend
one leg as high as you can. This is restoring hip extension,
which will help
reverse all the hip flexion you get from a long day of sitting, and it's
activating your glute and lower back muscles into extension as
well.
Then step three: use our lumbar extension exercise to focus
on
restoring the mobility you are losing in your low back by reversing
all the
flexion from sitting. This will reverse disc pressure away from
the nerve and
reduce your pain fast. And this combination of better sitting
and better
exercises will get you the relief that you've been after.
