Economic Collapse of Zimbabwe After Independence
One of the most successful countries in Africa was
destroyed by its own independence.
Rhodesia, a former British colony,
was once known as the breadbasket of Africa.
With rich farmland, a strong economy,
and one of the most effective militaries on the continent, it thrived.
But after years of brutal bush
war and heavy international pressure,
Rhodesia transitioned to majority rule in 1980 and became Zimbabwe.
What followed was
one of the fastest economic collapses in modern history.
Farmlands were seized, production plummeted, hyperinflation exploded,
and millions of people fled the country.
A nation that once fed much of Africa soon had to beg for food aid.
The dream of Rhodesia was over.
