Discussion on Historical Marriage Practices
You never ask a Catholic why was Mary 12 years old and
Joseph 90 when they married
Um, because Mary was a virgin. The Bible never even says she was 12,
but even if
she was 12, her marriage was never consummated.
And you never ask Jews why Rebecca was three and
Isaac 40 when they married.
Rebecca was not three in the Bible. Genesis never gives her age.
And why are we getting Rebecca's age from later rabbinic calculations when
those same rabbinic texts are discussing the legal status of a girl
three years and one day old in marriage?
The actual Bible describes Rebecca carrying water, watering camels,
traveling, and speaking for herself, saying, "I will go." You think a
three-year-old would do that?
So why does Islam get judged by practices that Christians and
Jews follow themselves?
Um, because the prophet you look up to as the
greatest man to ever live
married a girl when she was six and consummated the marriage when she
was nine
years old.
Why? In 1880, the legal age for intercourse in the
USA was nine, and in 1888 it was
raised to 12, and later it became 13.
And when the USA gained independence, the legal age was set
at seven.
Okay, and? America had horrible laws in the 1800s.
That does not defend Muhammad. If America allowed something immoral,
America was
wrong, too. Women didn't have rights back then either.
You think that's moral as well? But saying other societies did bad things
too is
not a defense. It just means more than one society failed
children.
And America eventually raised those ages because people recognized the
laws were wrong. I can bet my whole life that if you had a
six-year-old daughter, you would not give her up for marriage in
any time period,
because you already know that is wrong.
A six-year-old is a child, and it is a shame for you to sit there as
a mother, as a woman, defending children being married to men in
their
40s and 50s who then consummate those, those marriages.
Again, Mary was a virgin, and as Christians,
we look up to Jesus Christ
as the ultimate example. Jesus said in Matthew 18:6, "If
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble,
it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck
and to
be drowned in the depths of the sea." That's who we look up to
