Arsenic Levels in Halloween Candy
Watch out this Halloween. Dangerous levels of arsenic were
detected in sixty percent of popular children's candy.
The Florida Department of Health tested forty-six popular
candies, and twenty-eight of them contained
dangerous
elevated levels of arsenic. Arsenic is a potent
carcinogen. It is a poison. It's literally called the king of
poisons because it's tasteless and odorless and was used,
um, in the Middle Ages to basically murder
other people.
And so we go through the list here. So here is the
arsenic parts per billion readout for each of these candies.
But on the right is the safe consumption limit.
How many pieces can you eat per year before you reach dangerous levels
of arsenic? Laffy Taffy, four pieces a year before you
breach the arsenic limit. Nerds, you can only have ninety-six
pieces. There are thousands of pieces in
a Nerds box. Sweetarts, forty-eight pieces a year before you
breach the arsenic safety limit. Hershey's, thankfully, Hershey's milk
chocolate was clear. Hershey's cookies and cream, dangerous,
elevated arsenic levels. Jolly Ranchers, one of the worst offenders.
You can only have six pieces of Jolly Ranchers a year before you breach
the arsenic limit. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, thankfully,
that's in the
clear. Whoppers in the clear. Twizzlers are very, very
bad, riddled with arsenic. Kit Kats,
unfortunately, they also violated,
uh, the guidelines here and contained dangerous levels of
arsenic. And then we continue down the list.
Three Musketeers violated. Has arsenic.
M&M's in the clear, thankfully. Snickers
violated. You can only have a bit over two pieces of
Snickers a
year before you breach the arsenic safety limit.
Skittles contaminated with arsenic.
Sour Patch Kids, all flavors were contaminated.
Sweet as Fish. Tootsie Rolls. Tootsie Rolls were some of
the worst offenders. You can only have eight pieces a year for
a
child. Annie's bunnies, organic bunnies.
Thankfully, those are not riddled with arsenic.
Um, so-called smart sweets, uh, fish and
caramel, um, those had arsenic. And then lastly, we get to
all these organic ones, Unreal, Yum Earth.
Uh, thankfully, those brands did not have arsenic.
So watch out. You know, it's not good.
It's not good to eat large amounts of arsenic chronically.

carcinogen.
