Just one day before September 11th, 2001, the Secretary of Defense stood in front of the cameras at the Pentagon and said something almost nobody remembers.
According to some estimates, we cannot track two point three trillion dollars in transactions.
Donald Rumsfeld told the country the Pentagon could not account for two point three trillion dollars in transactions, and that was September 10th. The next morning, hijacked airliners struck the World Trade Center. A third struck the Pentagon. But it's where the Pentagon was hit that raises
suspicion. It struck Wedge 1, the recently renovated southeast section of the building.
Inside that section was the Army office that handled financial management, budgeting, and accounting for headquarters.
Of the forty people from that program, budget and managerial accounting staff who were there that morning, thirty-four were killed. So here is the sequence of events.
Monday, the Secretary of Defense says two point three trillion dollars cannot be tracked. On Tuesday, the office that kept the Pentagon's financial records is destroyed, and almost everyone who worked inside that office dies.
Some might call the timing and the site of impact a coincidence.
But as far as coincidences go, there's one more, and it belongs to Donald Rumsfeld.
I reached out to Secretary Rumsfeld from Air Force One, and, uh, w- I was not able to get him. And it turns out one reason why is that he was becoming a first responder at the Pentagon. He was helping rescue people.
And he didn't just happen to be there when it happened.
Rumsfeld kept a piece of the plane on a plaque in his office, a reminder of the attack and the shift in the focus of the American people from the news he had given just the day before. Just a coincidence? You decide.
