Canada’s Bills C-11 and C-18: Free Speech and Social Media News
One thing that I wanted to talk to you about, and I'm really grateful to have this opportunity,
like I'm 25 years old and so I deal with a lot of the younger generation. I have a lot of younger
friends as well because I'm doing my bachelor with a little bit of a gap year as well.
So I'm really concerned for my generation and the youth in general because as you mentioned
yourself actually while you were speaking, they don't have access to real information and facts.
A lot of what is being spread online is misinformation and propaganda and people
tend to adopt other people's opinions rather than do their own research and get to their own
consensus. And the thing that really bugs me specifically with Canada is Bill C-11. The fact
that all of us are on social media, that's where people are getting their political opinions and
political news and information from currently. TikTok being a crazy black hole of information
right now and the actual valid news channels and credible sources are not seen on our phones. We
can't see it on Instagram, we can't see it on Facebook, we can't even see non-profit organizations
for some of them if they're heavily political or whatever. I'm going to get rid of those bills.
That is my biggest concern and I don't understand why it's not being talked about.
And again I feel like it's kind of like working hand in hand when the news is not there for people
to even be aware of what's going on around them. They're not going to talk about it, they're going
to be misinformed, not going to vote correctly. Exactly. That's how you're actually influencing
voting results. You need to have free speech, you need to allow free expression online. So I'm going
to get rid of C11, C18. C11, by the way, it's not just the censorship but now they're using it as
a tool to increase the Netflix tax. You have to pay more taxes just to watch Netflix. They just
came out in the last two days, they call it the streaming tax. So I'm going to get rid of all that
stuff and restore free expression online because free expression is the first freedom. Without it
you can't have any other freedom. That's actually, just to make one more point, that was the first
thing my parents told me when we moved to Canada because my family is actually originally
Muslim. The whole family was Muslim and then my parents were brave enough to try
to explore other religions once they left. When we were in Dubai, I was much younger, they converted
to being Baha'is for a while. They got blacklisted and stuff as a result of that. But when we would
go to Iran, from the young age of five and six, I was told, Nusha, you cannot say Allah,
you cannot say this, you cannot say that, we're going to get killed. So when we came to Canada,
my parents were like, you can say whatever the hell you want. You can use whatever words, whatever
greeting, you can have whatever opinion. That's freedom of speech. You can say whatever the hell
you want. That's exactly how you sum it up. Ever since COVID. I know, too much control, too much government
control. We need less control, more freedom, bottom up, not top down. That's what I'm trying to do.
I want to make this the freest country in the world. Do you agree with that? Yes, for sure.
I want this to be a Canada I want to stay in. Absolutely.
