German military in Poland: A4 collision and embassy statement

Mr. Speaker, honorable members! Videos and photos of Bundeswehr heavy vehicles and personnel carriers traveling along Polish roads, and even involved in a collision on the A4 motorway have been setting Polish social media ablaze since yesterday.

A six-mile traffic jam, a delay lasting many hours, because three or even four trucks collided with markings that were, well, let's put it mildly, German.

And this is happening amid a deep constitutional crisis in Poland, the government's heavy- handed actions surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal and open disquiet within the Polish security services.

Citizens are asking in terror, why exactly is the German military entering Poland?

And Germany's ambassador, Miguel Berger, published an official press release that was meant to put an end to all speculation, but contrary to the ambassador’s intentions its contents left the recipients of the message even more astonished and doubtful.

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Warsaw decided to issue a statement entitled “Shared security and partnership ties the reason for the presence of Bundeswehr forces in Poland.”

The diplomats’ response to questions about the military convoys’ journey is, however, at the very least peculiar.

The German Embassy is currently inviting people to celebrations marking the seventy- first anniversary of the Bundeswehr’s founding, as part of which an exhibition is being presented dedicated to the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the Air Force celebrated at all German diplomatic missions abroad.

The German Embassy clearly emphasizes that the current presence is solely ceremonial and coordinated.

The German diplomat also stipulates that any disinformation suggesting Germany's involvement in Poland's internal affairs or insinuating that allies are being used for its own purposes will be firmly rejected.

So, ladies and gentlemen, we can sleep soundly, because the German military is watching over our sleep.
