Wars, Sports, and Jewish Safety: Rav Moshe’s Teaching
And they go out opposite each other to battle.
Umaktil chad minayhu, v'umdai, u'mitardei l'ukmi
malka. And through that, they're so busy in
establishing new sovereignties in the place
where the person fell, that they don't bother
Klal Yisrael. Meaning, that Hashem does a chesed,
and they're so busy killing each other that
they don't kill us. So, it's a historical overview
of the various wars and battles, world wars,
etc. So busy battling each other, they leave
us alone. Now, Rav Moshe Zatzal would say, that
that's the ma'alah of sports. The goyim are
so busy in sports, they don't have time to cheppah
the Jews. Instead of boxing, where they pummel
and kill each other, instead of pummeling and
killing us. Kol panim, they have national pastimes,
some of them benign like baseball, some a little
more dangerous like football, where they're
wired for sound to hear the crunch of the broken
bone. But the more they pummel each other, the
less they pummel us. Ita b'Romi, v'chol yoma
nafka hani l'havya. They kill each other, umaktil
chad minayhu, knock off one of them, mitardei
l'ukmi malka. And that's really Malka, establishing
another king. That's what Yaakov was davening
for, that they should knock each other out.
The descendants of Eisav. Whether Edom, or Germamia
of Edom, they should be so busy fighting each
other that they don't bother us.
