It's a new day in a newly blue Texas, and people are digesting just what that means for them, a historic shift in power, a change in the political landscape here and across the United States.
I've come to a classic Texan barbecue joint to find out what people make of it.
It's a brand-new day in Texas. I was thinking of leaving, and I'm not anymore.
Donald Trump told everybody to remind themselves that he was on the ballot, and we saw what happened.
They took his advice, but maybe not in the way he intended.
They took his advice, and they did as much of voting him out as they possibly could in a midterm election.
I was, quite frankly, surprised that the money didn't win this time, that integrity did instead.
E- Elon Musk spent more than $200 million of his own money trying to win this state f- for the Republican Party.
Didn't work, did it? Adios, Elon. Feels a lot like, um, you know, at least in Austin when, when Obama won the presidency downtown, there was people in the streets and, and, uh, partying, having a good time, so.
I- it feels like a big deal here that- Absolutely. Mm-hmm.
Yeah, absolutely feels like a big deal- Mm-hmm ... um, especially for Texas.
Five or six y- short years ago, we had the biggest, uh, we had the largest conservative turnout of a landslide in the history of, like, the state of Texas.
It, it's always metropolitan areas are very blue.
Blue even in rural areas. Yes, a lot of- Uh, can you believe that?
No. I'm looking at it as that did blow my mind.
I vote with my wallet, so I just hope it doesn't get much more expensive.
Mm-hmm. That's how I vote. Do you think most people in Texas voted with their wallet?
Clearly not. Was cost of living the deciding factor here, do you think?
Not for us. Mm-hmm. It was more the social issues that the Abbotts and the Paxtons and the Dan, uh, what's the his name?
Dan Patrick. Dan Patrick- Mm-hmm ... of the world were throwing on top of us that I don't think the people in Texas wanted.
They're victimizing, um, trans people. Mm-hmm.
Um, you know, smoke and mirrors, I think.
Uh, that, that was really upsetting to me.
We have never had a Latina governor- Mm-hmm ... a female governor again since- Mm-hmm ...
Ann Richards, so those are the reasons- Mm-hmm ... that it's been emotional in a good way.
I have daughters and daughters' friends that whose bodies should belong to them, and they get to make their own decisions.
I feel like having a female voice, or really any voice that supports female rights- Mm-hmm ... is important, and I feel like we got that.
Mm-hmm.
