Why do Real Madrid play in white?
And how did Corinthians Paulista come to be formed?
Well, believe it or not, it's all thanks to an amateur club based in the South London suburb of Tolworth.
A club who served Manchester United their biggest ever defeat.
A club who introduced the word "soccer" to the world.
And a club who once played in front of 97,000 people at Wembley.
This is the story of Corinthian-Casuals.
A club created in 1882 to make England a global football force.
And introduce a Corinthian style to the game.
That was playing with respect for the game, the opposition.
And introducing the embodiment of how a gentleman would play football.
Their players often advised the referee on any incorrect decisions,
even if it proved detrimental to themselves.
They rejected penalties as it undermined their values,
would either pass them to the goalie or just step aside and let them in.
And they're the first and only club to have fielded an entire England 11 made up from one club.
All whilst maintaining amateur status.
Something amazingly they've maintained to this day.
But before Tolworth, they played here, in the now world-famous cricket ground, The Oval.
And it's believed here that Arthur Johnson, the man behind Real Madrid's reason to wear white,
saw them and was so enamoured by their style and conduct on the pitch,
he made Los Blancos blanco in their honour.
But the story doesn't stop there.
Really looking to embody that British spirit, they invaded the world with football.
And it was on the streets of São Paulo that they impressed so much
that a group of local railway workers formed a club inspired by them.
Bonded by colours, namesake, and mantra.
And that bond was never broken.
So much so that when Corinthians fans were asked of any club in the world
that they could play to open their new stadium,
they unanimously picked those South London amateurs. That brotherhood.
And as their fans still chant, "Our history will always be".
And that history changed football forever.
